2013 was Hollyoaks's nineteenth year of production.
Overview[]
Bryan Kirkwood continued as executive producer for a second year, whilst Tony Wood was removed from credits in March 2013. This year also saw Emma Smithwick removed from the credits in January 2013, with her storylines (such as Esther's suicide attempt) continuing during Kirkwood's reign.
With the show developing an "OTT" outlook, several characters were axed. Several characters were the focus of high-profile exits, such as Brendan Brady, Cheryl Brady, Simon Walker and Texas Longford. With the new outlook, an increase in fast-paced dramatic stories and quantity of deaths dramatically increased - with Callum Kane, Jade Hedy, Clare Devine, Paul Browning, Ash Kane, Doug Carter and Leanne Holiday being killed off in the space of seven episodes. This outlook produced some problems for the show initially, as Brendan and Walker's showdown was censured by Ofcom due to violent scenes pre-watershed.
Teenager Sinead O'Connor gave birth to a daughter (3609), Diane Hutchinson gave birth to twins and Tegan Lomax to a daughter (3718), Maxine Minniver was informed of the birth of sister Mitzeee's son (3614), whilst Lindsey Butterfield tragically suffered a miscarriage after being hit by Frankie Osborne's car. Will Savage married Texas Longford but pushed her to her death shortly afterwards (3599), Mercedes McQueen was dragged up the aisle by Paul Browning (3628) and Sandy Roscoe and Fraser Black had a Christmas wedding (3763), whilst Vincent Elegba jilted Phoebe McQueen over his sexuality (3734) and Lindsey Butterfield jilted Joe Roscoe over his infidelity (3740). Esther Bloom received a liver transplant (3531) from a man who overdosed on cocaine (L2013-2), Brendan Brady pushed his rival Simon Walker in front of a train (3562) and Cheryl Brady shot her abusive father dead (3563). Darren Osborne discovered that his mother-in-law died in a car crash (3618), Trevor Royle murdered a policeman (3658), Browning's patient Gita Rahj died of cardiac arrest (3360), Ste Hay assisted the suicide of his cancer-stricken mother (3661), Will drowned his mother in a bathtub (3691), whilst Browning killed Clare Devine, Mercedes killed Browning, and Clare's bomb killed Ash Kane, Doug Carter (3713) and Leanne Holiday (3716).

- 4th January - On the orders of Brendan Brady, Joel Dexter attempts to murder Seamus Brady by beating him unconscious with a baseball bat before setting fire to a shack with Seamus inside.
- 8th January - Dirk Savage proposes to Myra McQueen, however she rejects after telling him that she's not pregnant, but dying.
- 9th January - Bart McQueen and Joel Dexter plan to steal £250,000 pounds from Brendan Brady but are caught and are told to flee by Brendan or they will be killed. (Last appearance of Joel until 2016 and Bart until 2017)
- 11th January - Will Savage purposefully falls down a flight of stairs outside Chez Chez during an argument with Texas Longford.
- 14th January - Will Savage suffers a cardiac arrest caused by his fall down the Chez Chez stairs.
- 21st January - Esther Bloom attempts suicide in The Folly by overdosing on pills and vodka, causing her to collapse. Frankie Osborne reports Esther missing, but she is found the next morning by George Smith. Frankie later finds pills in Esther's bag and realises Esther has attempted suicide. She collapses and is rushed to hospital.
- 31st January - The McQueen family are arrested after a bar brawl at The Dog in the Pond.
- 6th February - Ruby Button is accidentally struck by a car driven by Jack Osborne.
- 7th February - Mitzeee Minniver discovers she is pregnant.
- 12th February - Amy Barnes returns to the village unexpectedly. (First appearance of the character since 2012)
- 14th February - Cheryl Brady is arrested on suspicion of soliciting prostitution. Carl Costello prepares to fatally stab Simon Walker, however he changes his mind at the last minute.
- 15th February - Mitzeee Minniver leaves the village with Carl and Bobby. (Last appearance of Carl and Bobby until 2018 and final appearance of Mitzeee)
- 18th February - Annalise Appleton moves to London after being offered a job. She reconciles with Rob Edwards and the pair leave together. (Final appearance of the characters)
- 27th February - Brendan Brady is arrested on suspicion of sexual assault when Kevin Foster falsely reports him to the police.
- 4th March - Kevin Foster drugs and prepares to strangle Maxine Minniver on the orders of Simon Walker. However, he cannot go through with it and instead keeps her captive and fakes her death.
- 5th March - Will Savage proposes to Texas Longford, who accepts.
- 7th March - Sinead O'Connor is injured after falling off a ladder outside Price Slice.
- 12th March - Nate Tenbury-Newent proposes to Cheryl Brady, who accepts.
- 14th March - Brendan Brady viciously assaults Ste Hay.
- 15th March - Simon Walker beats Kevin Foster with a pipe before taking Seamus and Brendan Brady hostage inside 2 Oakdale Drive.
- 18th March - Simon Walker is arrested by armed police, however he causes the police car to crash and manages to escape.
- 19th March - Brendan Brady and Simon Walker have a deadly fight on a rail bridge. Brendan ends up kicking Walker in front of an oncoming train, causing him to be fatally struck. (Final appearance of Simon Walker)
- 20th March - Cheryl Brady discovers that her father Seamus has been sexually abusing her brother Brendan, and shoots him dead after walking in on Seamus attempting to rape Brendan.
- 21st March - With police swarming outside The Loft, Brendan Brady attempts suicide by cop after confessing to the murders of Danny Houston, Mick Cornus, Flo Brady and falsely confessing to the murder of Seamus Brady. He aims the gun used to kill Seamus at a sniper, stopping his sister, Cheryl, from revealing that the gun is not loaded, and is shot.
- 22nd March - Ste Hay meets Brendan Brady in hospital, discovering that Brendan survived the shooting. Brendan says goodbye to Ste before being escorted to prison. Cheryl Brady moves to Derry with Nate Tenbury-Newent. Mercedes McQueen goes missing in Las Vegas. (Final appearances of Brendan and Cheryl Brady).
- 27th March - Mercedes McQueen's kidnapper is revealed to be Clare Devine. (First appearance of the character since 2009)
- 28th March - Phoebe McQueen is arrested on suspicion of robbery.
- 1st April - Phoebe McQueen suffers a seizure after binge drinking Trudy Ryan's dodgy vodka.
- 2nd April - Patrick Blake meets new student Robbie Roscoe. (First appearance of the character)
- 4th April - Jen Gilmore is arrested for her relationship with underage student Tilly Evans. (Final appearance of Jen)
- 9th April - Clare Devine beats Mercedes Fisher unconscious with a telephone.
- 10th April - After working out that she is behind the kidnap of Mercedes Fisher, Paul Browning attempts to kill Clare Devine by strangling her but is interrupted by Jim McGinn.
- 15th April - Jacqui McQueen meets Trevor Royle. (First appearance of the character)
- 16th April - An unknown person is struck by a van driven by Robbie Roscoe. Jacqui McQueen discovers six illegal immigrants in the back of her truck, one of them being Vincent Elegba. (First appearance of Vincent Elegba)
- 17th April - Robbie Roscoe, Callum Kane and Sinead O'Connor flee the scene of the accident. Diane O'Connor is informed that her son, Finn O'Connor, was the one struck in the hit-and-run. Diane later faints in hospital and discovers she is pregnant. (First appearance of Finn O'Connor since 2011)
- 19th April - Trevor Royle is knocked unconscious by Tony Hutchinson, who smashes a pot plant over Trevor's head as he prepares to attack Jacqui McQueen.
- 23rd April - Clare Devine attacks Paul Browning by hitting him over the head with a brick.
- 24th April - Paul Browning is taken hostage by Clare Devine, who confronts Tom Cunningham over the stolen money. Darren Osborne catches Clare and restrains her, and she is arrested.
- 26th April - Mercedes Fisher visits Jacqui McQueen, who has fled the village to escape Trevor Royle, in Alicante. (Last appearance of Jacqui until 2023)
- 29th April - Kevin Foster is viciously assaulted by Ste Hay.
- 2nd May - Maxine Minniver collapses after drinking Callum Kane's beer which was spiked by Robbie Roscoe. Tony Hutchinson is diagnosed with testicular cancer.
- 6th May - Robbie Roscoe's brother, Freddie, arrives in the village. (First appearance of the character)
- 9th May - Texas Longford and Will Savage marry, but after the ceremony, Texas is pushed through the steeple window of the church.
- 10th May - Texas Longford dies from injuries sustained after being pushed through a church steeple window by an unknown assailant. Dodger Savage is arrested on suspicion of Texas's murder.
- 13th May - Will Savage is revealed as Texas Savage's murderer in a flashback to their wedding day. (Final appearance of Texas)
- 15th May - Leanne Holiday is arrested for the murder of Texas Longford. Barney Harper-McBride moves back home with his family. (Final appearance of the character)
- 16th May - Carmel Valentine, Paul Browning and Mercedes Fisher are arrested after the police find Ste Hay's drugs in the Chez Chez office.
- 21st May - Robbie Roscoe and Finn O'Connor perform an armed robbery at Price Slice, taking Sinead O'Connor and Darren Osborne hostage. When Callum Kane attempts to disarm Robbie, he is shot in the scuffle. However, whilst in hospital, Callum goes into cardiac arrest.
- 22nd May - Sinead O'Connor goes into labour.
- 23rd May - Sinead O'Connor gives birth to a baby girl. Jason Roscoe arrives in the village and is accused by Darren Osborne, of the armed robbery committed by his brother, Robbie. Joe and Ziggy Roscoe arrive in a broken-down moving van. Sandy Roscoe arrives to collect the keys to 65 Christleton Terrace from landlord Darren, only to find the family intimidating him. (First appearances of Jason, Joe, Ziggy and Sandy Roscoe)
- 24th May - Jason Roscoe is arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.
- 29th May - Texas Longford's funeral takes place.
- 30th May - Dodger Savage discovers that Theresa McQueen murdered Calvin Valentine in May 2010. She ends up threatening him with a gun but is talked down by Will Savage. Dodger learns that Will married Texas Longford out of spite and violently attacks him before throwing him into her grave.
- 3rd June - Lindsey Butterfield arrives in the village as the new doctor at Dee Valley University Hospital. (First appearance of the character)
- 4th June - Sienna Blake causes a fire inside 1 Stockton Lane in an attempt to make Nancy Osborne appear as an unfit mother.
- 5th June - Nancy Osborne discovers that her mother has been killed in a car accident in Canada.
- 6th June - Whilst dealing Ste Hay's drugs at Chez Chez, Sinead O'Connor is attacked by an angry student whom she had sold dodgy drugs to.
- 7th June - Sinead O'Connor is arrested on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. Tony Hutchinson is informed that his cancer has spread aggressively to his pelvis.
- 13th June - Paul Browning attempts to rape Lindsey Butterfield in an elevator. She manages to fight him off and escape.
- 19th June - On the day of Mercedes McQueen and Paul Browning's wedding, Myra McQueen discovers that Paul murdered Lynsey Nolan. However, she is unable to stop the wedding and Mercedes and Paul marry.
- 21st June - Anna Blake, having escaped from a psychiatric unit, sneaks into 5 Oakdale Drive, Flat 1 and knocks Patrick Blake unconscious by smashing a vase over his head.
- 24th June - Anna Blake takes Patrick Blake hostage, drugging him with sedatives and preparing to blow up the flat with them and Sienna Blake (who refuses to leave) inside. Maxine Minniver arrives under the guise of a pizza delivery woman and attacks Anna. Maxine, Patrick and Sienna escape and Anna is arrested.
- 27th June - Dennis Savage proposes to Leanne Holiday, who accepts.
- 1st July - Phoebe McQueen is kidnapped by Trevor Royle.
- 2nd July - Lindsey Butterfield discovers that she is pregnant. Ste Hay is beaten unconscious by Trevor Royle.
- 8th July - New supply teacher Danny Lomax arrives in the village. (First appearance of the character)
- 10th July - Nancy Osborne is accidentally struck by a car driven by Joe Roscoe when Sienna Blake pushes Oscar Osborne's pram in front of a car, making her believe that Oscar is inside.
- 11th July - Katy O'Connor is rushed to hospital, suffering from meningitis.
- 15th July - Ste Hay is arrested for possession of an illegal substance.
- 18th July - Ste Hay and Freddie Roscoe rob a hospital van full of drugs. When Trevor Royle and his henchmen turn up, Freddie ends up attacking them and is stabbed.
- 22nd July - Paul Browning is arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to steal.
- 24th July - Liberty Savage leaves for Los Angeles to work for a record label. (Last appearance of the character until 2018)
- 26th July - Will Savage attempts to kill his girlfriend, Ash Kane, by pushing her off a cliff but ends up backing out.
- 31st July - DC Richie Trent is fatally shot by Trevor Royle.
- 2nd August - Paul Browning discovers that his hospital patient, Mrs. Rahj, has died after a battle with a terminal illness.
- 5th August - Pauline Hay dies in a suicide assisted by her son, Ste.
- 6th August - Ste Hay is arrested on suspicion of the murder of Pauline Hay. Paul Browning, pretending to be a burglar, beats Myra McQueen unconscious with an iron bar.
- 7th August - Doctor Browning, wearing a ski mask, strangles Myra McQueen. He is spotted by Carmel Valentine and Jim McGinn who stop him, but he manages to flee. In hospital, Browning attempts to suffocate Myra, but is interrupted by Nana McQueen. Myra later regains consciousness, and Browning is arrested for attempted murder when Myra names him as her attacker.
- 8th August - Carmel Valentine proposes to Jim McGinn, who accepts. Fraser Black arrives in the village. (First appearance of the character)
- 15th August - Having been framed by Sienna Blake for kidnaping Charlie Dean and Oscar Osborne, Nancy Osborne is involved in a police chase which ends with her crashing through the wall of a multi-storey carpark. The trio manage to escape the car before it falls, but Nancy is arrested by the police.
- 20th August - Sam Lomax arrives in the village as a surprise for her husband, Danny. (First appearance of Sam Lomax)
- 22nd August - Paul Browning attempts to kill Cindy Cunningham by strangling her, but she survives. However, whilst trying to get up, she is left injured when a shelf falls on her.
- 3rd September - Myra McQueen is shot by Paul Browning after he confronts her at the docks.
- 4th September - Mercedes Browning bludgeons her husband, Paul, with her high-heel shoe. He manages to restrain her and strangles her.
- 5th September - Paul Browning is arrested on suspicion of murder. John Paul McQueen discovers that Myra McQueen survived being shot by Paul Browning as she was wearing a bulletproof vest, and was working with Jim McGinn.
- 6th September - The Roscoe brothers' uncle, Ken, is attacked by an unknown attacker.
- 9th September - Sinead O'Connor is sentenced to community service for supplying a controlled drug.
- 11th September - Freddie Roscoe is kidnapped by Trevor Royle and left to die in a freezer.
- 12th September - Trevor Royle prepares to shoot Freddie Roscoe and bury him with Richie Trent. Freddie attacks him but Trevor catches him and beats him unconscious. Fraser Black arrives and stops Trevor from killing Freddie.
- 16th September - Anna Blake is murdered by her son, Will Savage, by being drowned in a bath.
- 17th September - Patrick Blake is arrested on suspicion of the murder of his ex-wife, Anna Blake.
- 18th September - Lindsey Roscoe is accidentally hit by a car driven by Frankie Osborne.
- 19th September - Lindsey Butterfield suffers a miscarriage. Frankie Osborne is arrested for driving without due care and attention.
- 20th September - Jim McGinn proposes to Carmel Valentine, who accepts.
- 23rd September - Sandy Roscoe reveals that she is the biological mother of Darren Osborne.
- 25th September - Freddie Roscoe sets fire to The Loft.
- 26th September - Sinead O'Connor falls down the stairs of The Loft after collapsing due to smoke inhalation. Jim McGinn is arrested on suspicion of arson after being set up by Freddie Roscoe and Trevor Royle.
- 2nd October - For the assisted suicide of Pauline Hay, Ste Hay receives a 24-month custodial sentence, suspended for 2 years. Tony Hutchinson collapses. John Paul McQueen and Danny Lomax discover the body of DC Richie Trent.
- 4th October - Peri Lomax arrives in the village to surprise her parents. (First appearance of the character)
- 7th October - Ste Hay is arrested on the suspicion of the murder of D.C. Richie Trent after being framed by Trevor Royle and Fraser Black. Tony Hutchinson is visited by old friend Finn, brother Dom Reilly and son Harry Thompson. He later sees the ghost of Kurt Benson. Theresa McQueen visits her cousin at his army camp, and is shocked to find Duncan Button. (First appearance of Finn since 2002, Dom since 2010, Harry since 2009, Kurt since 1999 and Duncan since 2011)
- 9th October - Esther Bloom is kidnapped. Harry Thompson is kidnapped by The White Man. Tony Hutchinson collapses.
- 10th October - Will Savage proposes to Ash Kane, who accepts. Tony Hutchinson sees the ghost of his late daughter, Grace Hutchinson. He has a vision of his ex-wife, Mandy Hutchinson, telling him not to follow Grace to the afterlife. Esther Bloom's kidnapper is revealed to be Jade Hedy. Wes Anderson is seriously injured after hitting his head on a table during a fight with Callum Kane, and Wes is later fatally stabbed by Jade to make Callum think he killed Wes. Callum later finds Esther but whilst attempting to rescue her, he is killed when Jade stabs him with a samurai sword. (First appearance of Mandy since 2011 and last until 2017 and final appearance of Callum Kane)
- 11th October - Paul Browning slits his wrists with the sharp end of a toothbrush. In the ambulance, Paul is pronounced dead, but he awakens and attacks the paramedics before making his escape. Clare Devine's trial for the assault and kidnapping of Mercedes Browning and Paul takes place; she is exonerated when Mercedes is purposefully caught lying on the stand so Fraser Black and Trevor Royle will leave the McQueens alone. Jade Hedy is fatally stabbed during a fight with Tilly Evans. Tony Hutchinson says goodbye to his friends and family before returning to England. (Final appearances of Kurt, Duncan, Grace and Dom, last appearance of Finn and Harry until 2015)
- 15th October - Will Savage attempts to strangle Ash Kane to death, but stops himself before being interrupted by Dodger Savage. Clare Devine attempts to blow up The Loft by planting a bomb inside, unaware the bomb has been moved to Ste Hay and Doug Carter's leaving party at 28a Fern Street. The partygoers at 28a Fern Street as well as Will, Ash and Dodger in 28b Fern Street are caught up in the explosion.
- 16th October - Doug Carter and Ash Kane die from injuries sustained in the house explosion, caused by Clare Devine. Clare is fatally run over by Paul Browning after Mercedes Browning throws her into the path of his oncoming car. Paul later tries to kill Mercedes, but is rescued by Cindy Cunningham who hits him over the head with a shovel. When he wakes up and tries to kill Lindsey Butterfield, Mercedes murders Paul by bludgeoning him with the shovel. (Final appearances of Clare Devine and Paul Browning)
- 18th October - Will Savage attempts to suffocate his brother, Dodger, with a pillow, but is interrupted by Dirk Savage. Cindy Cunningham reveals that she is pregnant with Doctor Browning's baby.
- 21st October - Leanne Holiday is killed by internal injuries from a bomb detonated by Clare Devine, shortly after marrying Dennis Savage. (Final appearance of the character)
- 22nd October - Maxine Minniver aborts her and Dodger Savage's baby. She later collapses.
- 23rd October - Diane O'Connor gives birth to a baby boy and girl, whilst Tegan Lomax gives birth to a girl. (First appearances of Tegan Lomax, Rose Lomax, Anthony Hutchinson and Dee Dee Hutchinson)
- 24th October - Leela Lomax arrives in the village, almost running over Leah Barnes and Lucas Hay in her car. (First appearance of the character)
- 25th October - Maxine Minniver collapses due to an ectopic pregnancy.
- 28th October - Phoebe McQueen proposes to Vincent Elegba, who accepts.
- 29th October - Vincent Elegba proposes to Phoebe McQueen, who accepts.
- 4th November - Doug Carter and Leanne Holiday's funeral takes place.
- 6th November - Will Savage kidnaps and holds Martha Kane, Dodger Savage, Patrick & Sienna Blake as well as Maxine Minniver hostage. Tom Cunningham, locked in the basement, falls down the stairs when a gun Sienna and Will fight over is fired. Will later shoots Martha and believes that he has killed her, not realising he had shot her shoulder and she survived.
- 7th November - After being teased about the murder of Texas Longford, Dodger Savage pushes his brother Will through a window, with the pair fighting on top of the roof. Will slips from the roof and Dodger attempts to rescue him. Will pulls Dodger from the roof, causing Dodger to fall onto Will and crush his spinal cord, leaving Will permanently paralysed. Will is arrested for murder. (Last appearance of Will Savage until 2014)
- 8th November - Martha Kane leaves the village. Grace Black arrives in the village for the funeral of her sister, Clare Devine, to the surprise of her father, Fraser Black. (First appearance of the character)
- 12th November - Freddie Roscoe, Mercedes Browning, Cindy Cunningham and Lindsey Butterfield stage Paul Browning's death as a car accident by putting Paul's body in his car, setting it alight and pushing it off a cliff.
- 14th November - Phoebe McQueen and Vincent Elegba prepare to elope in Derry. However, Vincent jilts Phoebe at the altar and later tells her that he doesn't love her as he is gay.
- 15th November - Illegal Nigerian immigrant Vincent Elegba is arrested after being found in the boot of Tilly Evans's car at the Irish border.
- 19th November - Jason Roscoe collapses due to high blood sugar.
- 20th November - Joe Roscoe is arrested for the murder of D.C. Richie Trent.
- 21st November - Freddie Roscoe is arrested for the murder of D.C. Richie Trent.
- 22nd November - Lindsey Butterfield jilts Joe Roscoe at the altar after discovering his affair with Nancy Osborne.
- 26th November - Jack Osborne is arrested on suspicion of downloading indecent images of children after Robbie Roscoe falsely reports him to the police. During a search of his car, a blood-stained shirt is found and Jack is arrested on suspicion of kidnapping Tom Cunningham. Frankie Osborne pleads guilty to driving without due care and receives a fine.
- 29th November - Trevor Royle and Tony Hutchinson are assaulted by Ray McCormick and his associate.
- 2nd December - Paul Browning's funeral takes place.
- 6th December - Patrick Blake proposes to Maxine Minniver, who rejects.
